Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of acupuncture on Zhubin (K9) for reducing alcohol craving in patients with alcohol dependence, using Visual Analogue Scale(VAS).
Methods: 12 patients with alcohol dependence were divided randomly into two groups of 6 patients each: one was acupuncture group and the other was placebo group. The acupuncture group received real needle acupuncture therapy twice in a week for 4 weeks, while the placebo group received the same treatments with the Park Sham Device(PSD). Acupuncture therapy was performed at the both points of Zhubin (K9) for 15 minutes. Alcohol craving was evaluated by VAS at baseline, week 1, week 2 and finally week 4 of the study.
Results: The real needle acupuncture therapy group showed a significant decrease in VAS score for 4 weeks than the sham needle acupuncture therapy group(P¡´0.05). The VAS score dropped dramatically during the first week after treatment in particular(P¡´0.05). Voluntary hospitalization did not affect reducing alcohol craving significantly. Patients with job did not show significant difference than those without job.
Conclusions: In this clinical study, acupuncture on Zhubin (K9) with real needle showed significantly more effective in reducing alcohol craving than with sham needle. Further long term study is needed.
